Mechanical seals – a previously "neglected" niche in sealing technology?

A mechanical seal initially appears as a simple machine element consisting of two sealing surfaces arranged perpendicular to the shaft.  On closer inspection, however, it becomes apparent that the medium to be sealed - whether liquid, with or without solids - is oil, water, or all aqueous media such as alcohols, solvents, acids or alkalis - or gaseous - is at the same time a lubricating medium for the sliding surfaces.  However, the entire function of the seal also interacts with the machine to be sealed, which sometimes fluctuates greatly in operating conditions.  Despite everything, however, no miracle happens, but a permanently stable sealing gap must be formed.  Depending on the operating conditions, the sealing gap of a mechanical seal with its average gap height of less than one micrometer (a fraction of the thickness of a human hair) sometimes runs under mixed friction condition, but sometimes also in pure liquid lubrication.  Under mixed friction condition, the sliding materials are partially loaded up to their wear resistance limit; and in the end, the sealing effect (regarding minimal leakage) must also be guaranteed permanently.  The connections with materials technology - high-performance materials not only for the sliding surfaces, but also for the secondary seals (elastomers and semi-crystalline thermoplastics) and for the metallic building materials - are decisive for reliability.  Some detailed information on the application technology of the most important application industries round off the content of the reference book.  My book is aimed not only at manufacturers of mechanical seals but also at users from the broad spectrum of machine manufacturers, at operators who want to better understand their seals and at interested students of technical courses in mechanical engineering, mechanical and chemical process engineering.
